I kept running into the same friction point over and over: needing a quick calculation — a loan payment, a calorie target, a GPA conversion — and ending up on five different sites, each cluttered with ads or asking me to sign up for something that should take ten seconds.
The journey
· GrowingSo I built GetCalcBase. Started with a handful of finance calculators, then kept adding based on what I was actually searching for myself — a mortgage recast calculator after learning most people don't even know recasting exists as an alternative to refinancing, an AI token cost estimator after getting burned by an unexpectedly high API bill, a SIP calculator that actually shows inflation-adjusted returns instead of just an optimistic nominal number. Every calculator runs entirely in the browser — no backend, no server seeing your income or health numbers. That wasn't a marketing decision, it was just the obvious way to build it once I thought about it properly. It's now 50+ tools across finance, health, education, developer, and marketing categories, built and maintained solo.
Advice to founders
Build the thing you personally need first. Every calculator that's actually gotten traction started as "I needed this and couldn't find a good version" — not as a feature I thought would look good on a roadmap.
Dreams & what's next
I want GetCalcBase to become the default place people go for a quick, trustworthy calculation — not just another ad-cluttered site competing for the same search terms. Longer term, I'm building toward an API so other developers can embed these calculators directly into their own products instead of building the same math from scratch. Still solo for now, but open to the idea of bringing someone on once there's enough traction to justify it.
