Plenilune — an engraved lunar almanac for iPhone and iPad

Plenilune is a moon phase app built like an almanac rather than a dashboard. Every night, the lunar disc is recomputed from the Moon's real position — terminator, libration, tilt for your latitude — and then rendered as an engraving. The geometry comes from the sky; the hatching, the grain and the ink are drawn by hand. It is the one thing no other moon app on the App Store can claim: astronomy that is exact, and a picture you would hang on a wall.

What it does

Today's phase. The moon as it truly is today: its name, illumination, age, moonrise and moonset for your location, and the exact times of the next full and new moons.

The daily note. One almanac entry every morning, drawn from five registers — the sky, history, folklore, old sayings and nature. The ring around the moon that means rain tomorrow; the Harvest Moon that once gave farmers an extra hour in the field. What people have read in the sky, and what we know of it now.

Twelve moons, twelve names. Wolf Moon in January, Sturgeon Moon in August, Beaver Moon in November — each with its engraved emblem, the origin of its name and the story behind it.

A calendar you can travel through. Every phase of the month, day by day, with eclipses, solstices and equinoxes ahead. Each day opens onto its own card: rise, set, distance, apparent diameter. Go back to the moon on the night you were born, or the one over July 20, 1969.

Eclipses, computed for where you stand. Solar and lunar eclipses are flagged only if they will actually be visible from your position, with local times and a seven-day countdown. On the night of a lunar eclipse, the Earth's shadow really does cross the disc on screen.

Widgets like small prints. Home screen and lock screen: the day's phase, the month's calendar, the almanac note, the next moonrise. Quiet, legible, updating on their own.

Notifications that only ever talk about the sky. Four lines to choose from — full moons, new moons, rare events, the daily note — all off to begin with. No streaks, no nudges, nothing about your energy.
