vmup sends screenshots and files from your computer to a remote VM so AI coding agents can inspect them.

Launch date: Friday, July 9, 2027 at 08:00 AM UTC
vmup sends screenshots and files from your computer to a remote VM so AI coding agents can inspect them. It solves a common remote-agent problem: the agent can read a path on the VM, but the screenshots, PDFs, recordings, logs, and reference files you want to share are still on your laptop. vmup moves those files over SSH, places them in one clean folder, and gives you a ready-to-paste prompt containing that folder path.
The workflow is intentionally simple: collect files, validate them, stage a unique batch, upload it, and hand the resulting directory to the agent. After a successful upload, vmup prints the remote path and prompt and can copy the prompt to your clipboard automatically. Files receive predictable names such as image-01.png, video-01.mov, and file-01.pdf, making the batch easy for an AI agent to scan and discuss.
You can send files in several ways. Pass individual paths or a folder on the command line, open the native file picker, capture copied files and screenshots from the clipboard, or watch a local folder for newly added items. Profiles let you save multiple SSH destinations, while a one-off host option works with aliases from your existing SSH configuration. JSON output is available for scripts and automated workflows.
vmup is built for reliable agent handoffs. Uploads first land in a temporary partial directory and are renamed into place only after the transfer succeeds, so the AI agent never sees a half-written batch. Configurable time-to-live cleanup removes expired folders from the VM, while a prune command lets you clear batches immediately. File count and size limits help catch accidental transfers before they begin.
The tool is useful for developers, designers, QA engineers, and teams working with AI agents on remote machines. Send UI screenshots for implementation or review, attach logs and recordings to a bug report, provide PDFs and design references, or move a group of test artifacts into the agent's environment. Instead of uploading each asset separately or trying to paste binary files into a terminal chat, you share one folder path and one prompt.
vmup is free and open source under the MIT License. Install it globally from npm, run it without installation through npx, or use the provided shell installer. It requires Node.js 18 or newer and an OpenSSH client. macOS and Linux are supported, and Windows users can run it through WSL. The documentation covers setup, SSH profiles, clipboard capture, folder watching, cleanup, JSON output, troubleshooting, and every command and flag.
