How to Rank for Your Own Startup Name on Google

A startup not showing up on Google for its own name is almost always one of a few fixable things: Google hasn't indexed the site yet, something is blocking it (a leftover noindex, a robots.txt rule, a canonical pointing elsewhere), the homepage never clearly says the name, or the name is shared with something more famous. Diagnose first. Then fix the homepage title, H1 and site name, make your profiles around the web say the same thing, and track branded queries in Search Console every week. This guide is for indie founders in the first six months after launch.

The short answer

Learning to rank for your brand name is the easiest search win you'll ever get, and plenty of new products still miss it for weeks. People who heard about you from a launch, a friend or a podcast type your name into Google. If they land on a directory listing, a Reddit thread or a different company with the same name, some of them give up. That's demand you already earned, leaking away.

• Check indexing first. A site: search and Search Console's URL Inspection tool tell you in minutes whether Google has your homepage at all.

• Say the name where Google looks. Title tag, H1, first paragraph, and WebSite structured data on the homepage.

• Make the web agree with you. Same name, same one-line description and a link back on every profile you control.

• If the name is shared, add a modifier. Use it everywhere and aim to own "name + category" first.

• Measure weekly in Search Console, not by searching yourself every morning.

Why isn't your startup showing up on Google for its own name?

Figure out which of these you have before you touch anything. The fixes are different, and the wrong fix wastes a month.

• Not indexed yet. Google's SEO Starter Guide says Google is fully automated and you usually don't need to do anything except publish your site. Usually. A new domain with almost no links pointing at it can sit undiscovered for a while.

• A noindex tag survived from staging. The classic. Google's noindex documentation says that once Googlebot sees the rule, the page is dropped entirely from search results, no matter who links to it.

• robots.txt blocks the homepage. If Google can't crawl the page, it can't read your title, heading or structured data.

• The canonical points somewhere else, like the staging domain or a URL that redirects.

• The homepage never says the name. A title of "Home" and an H1 like "Ship faster with less stress" give Google nothing to connect to the word people type.

• The page is an empty shell until JavaScript runs. Google renders JavaScript, but its JavaScript SEO basics page still calls server-side or pre-rendering "a great idea".

• The name is shared or generic. Named after a common word, an herb or a bigger company? You're competing with everything else that word means.

• Almost nobody else mentions you. A three-week-old product with no profiles or links looks thin next to a ten-year-old company with the same name.

Illustrative example (made up, used through the rest of this post): Sorrel is a recipe-costing app for small bakeries and food trucks. You enter ingredients and supplier prices, and it tells you what each loaf really costs to make. The founder launched six weeks ago on sorrel.example. When she types "sorrel" into Google she gets herb recipes, a gardening page and an encyclopedia entry. Her site is nowhere. Everything about Sorrel here is fiction.

How do you diagnose it in 15 minutes?

1. Run a site: search for your domain. Per Google's site: operator documentation, the list isn't always complete or ranked, so treat it as a rough yes or no. No results at all is a strong hint the homepage isn't indexed.

2. Inspect the homepage in Search Console. Verify the site if you haven't; you need it for everything below. In the URL Inspection tool, read three fields: whether the URL is on Google, "Indexing allowed?", and the Google-selected canonical. Then click Test live URL and look at the screenshot. A blank one means Google isn't seeing what visitors see.

3. Read the source. Search the page source for noindex and canonical, then open /robots.txt and look for a leftover Disallow: /.

4. Search the name like a stranger. Private window. Try the bare name, then name plus category ("sorrel recipe costing"). Note what ranks above you and why.

5. Open the Performance report and filter queries by your name. Impressions with a poor position means Google knows you and ranks you low. Zero impressions usually means an indexing problem, or a name nobody searches yet.

What should your homepage say so Google knows your name?

Most brand name SEO is copy, not code. You can do it in an afternoon.

Title tag: name first, then what it does

Google's guide to influencing title links says to avoid vague descriptors like "Home" for your home page, to avoid keyword stuffing, and that the home page title is a reasonable place for a little extra information about your site. Its example of a concise branded title is "ExampleSocialSite: Sign up for a new account."

The tagline-only title is the sneaky one. It looks lovely in a browser tab, and nothing in it matches what people type when they look for you.

H1 and first paragraph

Google builds title links from several sources, including the main visual title and headings, so the H1 matters too. The hero line doesn't have to be "Sorrel", but the name and category should be in the first heading or the sentence under it: "Sorrel is a recipe-costing app for small bakeries and food trucks." Boring sentence. It works.

An About page with a real person on it

Product name, what it does, who built it and why, the founder's real name. Link it from the footer. And pick one spelling and capitalisation (Sorrel, not SORREL on one page and sorrel.app on another) and stick to it everywhere.

WebSite and Organization structured data

The site name in Google results is the label shown next to each result. Per Google's site names documentation, it's generated automatically from your home page and references to it around the web, and WebSite structured data on the home page is the most important way to state your preference. The same page warns that a generic name is unlikely to be selected and that the system generally won't give two global sites the same site name. Both matter if your name is a common word.

Google's Organization structured data guide says this markup can help Google understand your organization and disambiguate it in search results, and that logo can help Google pick which logo to show, for example in knowledge panels. There are no required properties. Here's a minimal version for Sorrel using only properties those two pages document. Both go in the homepage head:

<script type="application/ld+json">{"@context": "https://schema.org", "@type": "WebSite", "name": "Sorrel", "alternateName": ["Sorrel App", "sorrel.example"], "url": "https://sorrel.example/"}</script>

<script type="application/ld+json">{"@context": "https://schema.org", "@type": "Organization", "name": "Sorrel", "alternateName": ["Sorrel App", "sorrel.example"], "url": "https://sorrel.example/", "logo": "https://sorrel.example/logo.png", "description": "Recipe-costing app for small bakeries and food trucks", "sameAs": ["https://x.com/your-handle", "https://www.linkedin.com/company/your-company", "https://github.com/your-org"]}</script>

• Use the same name and alternateName in both, as the Organization page asks.

• The logo must be at least 112x112px, crawlable, and look right on a white background.

• Your lowercase domain as the last alternateName is Google's suggested backup if your preferred name isn't picked.

• Validate with the Schema Markup Validator. Google's site names page says the Rich Results Test doesn't support site names.

Be honest about what this does. The Organization page says Google does not guarantee that features using structured data will show up in search results. Markup helps Google understand you. It doesn't buy a knowledge panel or a top spot.

Favicon and sitelinks

Google's favicon guidelines ask for a square icon, recommend larger than 48x48px, and want a stable URL. A default framework icon next to your name looks abandoned. The extra links under a brand result are sitelinks, and Google's sitelinks page says they're automated and only shown when Google thinks they're useful. You can't request them. You can give Google informative titles and headings, a logical structure and concise internal link text.

Which profiles should match your site?

On a brand query, Google is working out which "Sorrel" the searcher means. The pages you control around the web are where you answer that. Search your name, see what shows up, and make these consistent:

• The social account you actually post from. Same name, same one-liner, homepage in the bio link.

• LinkedIn company page. Website field and tagline filled in. Founders often have a full personal profile and an empty company page.

• GitHub organization, if you have public code or docs.

• Crunchbase, if you're fine with a public company profile.

• Launch platform listings. Product Hunt, Aura++ and similar sites give your product a page with your name, a description and a link back, and early on those pages can show up for your name.

• Directories you've joined. Fix old descriptions and dead links. If you're still choosing, Aura++ compares the best startup directories for indie founders.

Use one canonical line everywhere: "Sorrel is a recipe-costing app for small bakeries and food trucks." Then add each profile URL to the sameAs list. Five accurate profiles that link to you beat 40 abandoned ones with three different descriptions.

What if your name is shared or a common word?

Sorrel's real problem is that "sorrel" is an herb. Someone typing the bare word is far more likely to want soup than software, and Google knows it. No title tag fixes that, and it isn't supposed to.

• Pick one modifier and use it everywhere. "Sorrel App" or "Sorrel for bakeries". In handles, profile names, your alternateName, how you introduce yourself on podcasts. People search the way you taught them to.

• Own "name + category" first. "Sorrel recipe costing" is winnable. The bare word may never be yours, and that's fine; people looking for you add the category after one bad search.

• Say the full phrase. In launch posts and your email signature, "Sorrel App" or the domain, never the bare word alone.

What not to do: rename to "Sorrel Recipe Costing Calculator Software" or stuff words into every title. Google's SEO Starter Guide says keyword stuffing is against its spam policies. If the clash is with another company in your own market, that's a naming and trademark question, and EarlyHunt covers it in how to name a product without walking into a trademark problem.

What if a bad or confusing result shows up?

An old listing with last year's details, a scraper that copied your homepage, a launch page with a dead link, a same-name company above you.

• Fix what you control first. Most launch sites and directories let you edit, or have a contact form.

• Ask owners nicely. One short email with the URL, the wrong line and the right line.

• Use Google's tool only when the page has changed. The Refresh Outdated Content tool is for pages you don't own that no longer exist or are significantly different from what Google shows. Google says not to use it if the information is still on the live page. For your own verified site, that page points you to recrawl or removal options in Search Console instead.

• Let go of what you can't control. A bigger same-name company may outrank you on the bare word for a long time. Put the energy into "name + category".

How do you measure branded search?

Don't judge progress by searching yourself. Google's Performance report help notes that results depend on the time, place, device and recent history of the person searching. Use Search Console.

The Performance report now has a branded queries filter. Per the Search Central announcement, it uses an AI-assisted classifier, has no effect on ranking, and only appears for top-level properties with enough queries and impressions. A six-week-old product often won't qualify yet.

Until then, add a Query filter and choose Custom (regex). Google's filtering help page says it uses RE2 syntax, matches anywhere in the query and isn't case-sensitive by default. For a unique name, the name plus a couple of misspellings is enough. For a shared name, leave the bare word out or your numbers fill up with soup recipes. Sorrel would use:

(sorrel app|sorrel recipe|sorrel cost|sorrel bakery|sorrel\.example|sorel app)

Log four numbers every Monday: branded impressions, branded clicks, average position for your main brand phrase, and what changed. The rows below are made up for Sorrel.

The healthy pattern is boring: impressions appear, position climbs, clicks follow. Still zero impressions two or three weeks after fixing indexing? Back to the diagnosis table. Impressions but few clicks? Look at what your result actually says, title and site name included.

What traps should you avoid?

• Waiting with noindex still on. Google's noindex page says it can take months for Googlebot to revisit a page, depending on its importance. Fix it and request indexing.

• Removing noindex with JavaScript. Google's JavaScript guide says it may skip rendering when it sees noindex, so the script may never run. Take it out of the original HTML.

• Buying ads on your own name before fixing the basics. It hides the problem and you pay for clicks you should get free.

• Renaming in a panic. Six weeks of a shared name isn't a reason to rebrand.

• Keyword-stuffed titles. They look spammy to people and to Google.

• Schema spam. Google's general structured data guidelines say not to mark up content readers can't see, or misleading content such as fake reviews, and structured data issues can lead to a manual action.

FAQ

How long until my startup ranks for its own name?

There's no fixed timeline. Google's SEO Starter Guide says some changes take effect in a few hours and others can take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging a change. The URL Inspection help page says requested indexing can take up to a week or two. A unique name with a clean setup is the fast case; a shared name takes longer and may never win the bare word.

Why does Google show a different site name for my homepage?

Site names are automated. Check that WebSite markup is on the homepage itself, that the name matches your title and page copy, and that you've added an alternateName, with your lowercase domain as the last fallback. Google says recrawling can take days to weeks.

Can I get a knowledge panel?

Not on request. Google's Knowledge Graph help page says knowledge panels are created automatically when there's enough information available on the open web. Good Organization markup helps Google know which logo is yours, with no guarantee.

Should I change my name if another company ranks first?

Usually not because of search. Own "name + category" and check again in two or three months. If the other company sells something close to yours, that's a legal question, so talk to someone qualified before paying for a rebrand.
