Domain Rating, or DR, is a score from 0 to 100 that Ahrefs assigns to a website based on the strength of its backlink profile. It looks at how many unique domains link to a site and how strong those linking domains are. That is the whole idea. It is not a measure of traffic, content quality, or how well a site actually ranks. It is a third-party estimate of one input into ranking, built by one company, using one company's index of the web.
Google does not use DR. Google has said, more than once, that it has no single site-wide authority score in its ranking systems. DR is useful anyway, but only if you understand exactly what it is measuring and, more importantly, what it is not.
Key facts
- DR is Ahrefs' 0-100 score of a site's backlink profile, based on referring domains and their own strength. It is logarithmic, so early gains are cheap and late gains are expensive.
- DR does not measure indexation, relevance, traffic, or the rel attribute on the link itself. A DR 80 page can send a link that is worth nothing.

Why DR is logarithmic, and what that means for you
DR does not move in a straight line. Going from a DR of 20 to a DR of 30 takes relatively few new referring domains. Going from 60 to 70 takes an enormous amount more, because the scale compresses as it climbs. This is intentional. It reflects the reality that most sites on the internet have very few backlinks, and only a small number have a lot.
For a new startup domain, this has a practical consequence. Your DR will probably climb fast in the first few months, from a handful of directory listings and a couple of press mentions. That early climb feels like momentum. Mostly it is proof that the bottom of the scale is easy, and the climb gets slower from here.
The five things DR does not tell you
DR is a single number distilled from a lot of underlying detail, and in the process it throws away almost everything a founder needs to know about a specific link.
It does not tell you if the page linking to you is indexed. A page Google has never crawled cannot pass any ranking value, no matter how strong the domain hosting it is.
It does not tell you the rel attribute on the link. Nofollow, sponsored, and UGC links generally pass little or no ranking signal, and DR does not distinguish a follow link from a nofollow one anywhere in the score.
It does not tell you if the linking page is topically relevant to your product. A backlink from a strong domain in an unrelated niche is weaker in practice than a modest one from a page that actually talks about what you do.
It does not tell you anything about traffic. A domain can carry a respectable DR built entirely from old links to pages nobody visits anymore.
And it does not tell you whether the link even renders in a form a crawler can see. A directory can carry a strong DR and still push its outbound links through client-side JavaScript. I have seen this personally: a high-DR directory whose listing template rendered every outbound link inside a script tag, so the link existed on screen for a visitor and did not exist at all for a search engine.
DR versus DA versus Authority Score versus Trust Flow
Several tools publish a similar-looking site strength score, and founders often treat them as the same measurement on the same ruler. They are not. Each vendor builds its own link index and applies its own formula, so the same site can carry meaningfully different numbers across tools, with no fixed conversion between them.

Never compare a DR to a DA and treat the gap as meaningful. They are not the same instrument, and a site with a low DR can carry a high DA, or the reverse, without either number being wrong.
The one thing DR is genuinely good for: triage
Where DR earns its keep is speed. Looking at a list of a hundred or two hundred places that might be worth a submission, you cannot manually vet every one before lunch. DR gives you a fast first pass, a way to sort a long list down to a shorter one worth checking properly.

How to check a link is real, without paid tools
You do not need an Ahrefs subscription to verify a specific link is doing something. Four steps cover it.
First, open the live listing page in a normal browser and confirm your link is actually there, not just promised in an email.
Second, view the page source and check the rel attribute on your anchor tag. No rel, or rel="follow", passes signal. rel="nofollow", "sponsored", or "ugc" generally does not.
Third, run a site: search for that exact listing URL in Google. If it does not come back, the page is not indexed and the link is invisible regardless of its rel attribute.
Fourth, load the page with JavaScript disabled, or view the raw HTML response, and confirm the link is present in what a crawler actually receives. This is the check that catches the JavaScript-only links mentioned earlier.

What to do instead of chasing DR
- Track referring domains growing month over month, not the DR number itself.
- Prioritize relevance over raw strength when a link is genuinely optional.
- Confirm indexation before counting any link as done.
- Spend the bulk of your time on product and distribution, and treat links as a byproduct of being visible, not the goal.
So what DR should a startup aim for
There is no target DR worth aiming for, and any number offered as one is arbitrary. A useful startup does not need a DR of 40, or 60, or any other round figure to rank for the terms that matter to it. The more useful question is whether your referring domains are increasing steadily, and whether the pages sending you those links are indexed, relevant, and real. Chase that instead. The DR number will follow on its own, and it will matter far less than you expect once it does.
