The Only Billboard

The Only Billboard is exactly what its name says: one billboard on the internet, showing one live ad at a time. There is no grid of tiny logos and no rotating inventory. One buyer owns the whole visible space until somebody else decides to take it over.

RELVE has now become the first paid advertiser and is live on the billboard. The next takeover costs $2; when that happens, RELVE moves into permanent History.

A claim can promote a company, a product, an event, a piece of art, a personal page, a fundraiser, or simply a joke that someone wants the internet to see. The current ad links directly to the owner's chosen website, so the space still works as advertising. The playful part comes from the rule around ownership: the next person can replace it, and the price rises by one dollar with every takeover. It never moves backward.

The mechanics are deliberately simple. A visitor sees the current billboard and the price of the next claim. The claim page lets a buyer prepare the message and destination. Once the purchase is completed and the content passes the published rules, that buyer becomes the current owner. Their ad remains live until the next successful claim. There is no fixed daily rotation and no need to compete in an auction that disappears as soon as the campaign ends.

Every replaced ad moves into the public History instead of vanishing. That turns each purchase into two things at once: current attention and a permanent record of having held the only spot. Over time, the sequence can show who arrived early, which messages people thought were worth taking over, and how the price changed from one owner to the next.

The format is useful for people who want something more memorable than an ordinary directory listing. A founder can launch a small product. An artist can point to a new work. A community can mark an inside joke. A larger brand can interrupt the run with a bold takeover. Because there is only one position, very different kinds of buyers can use the same object for different reasons.

What makes The Only Billboard unusual is not an ad-targeting algorithm. It is the tension created by a scarce, visible place. Visitors are not only looking at the advertisement; they are also looking at who currently owns the billboard, what it cost, and whether somebody will replace it. That curiosity gives the ad and the ownership story a chance to reinforce each other.

The project is open on the web and the rules are public. Legal content is welcome, the active billboard is clickable, and the History keeps earlier owners visible after their turn ends. For anyone who wants to advertise, make a statement, or leave a small mark in an ongoing internet object, the next claim is the way in.
